VARKIZAVarkiza or Alianthos is a beautiful suburb of Athens with a sandy beach on the way to Sounion. It is part of the municipality of Vari in southern Attica and is located east of the Megalo Daktylo (Large Finger) SW of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport and the Attiki Odos. Most of the street names are named after Greek myths as well as a main street named Poseidonos. Varkiza has a famous beach that is linked with a hotel that includes a tennis court, a park, a field, restaurant, tavern, night clubs, water sports, sailing centre... and much more. The large beach club of Varkiza, operated by the Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT), draws even larger crowds on summer weekends. Sometimes it seems as if the whole city has dropped by for a swim on this fine sand beach surrounded by extensive gardens. Facilities such as cabanas for day use, changing cabins, showers, snack bars, umbrellas and beach chairs as well as volleyball and basketball courts may be used by bathers. The tennis courts are lit for night play until 10p. Both motorised and non-motorised watersports facilities can be found nearby. GO THERE Take the Bus 171 right outside the Dafni Metro Station Propably that is the easiest way to go to Varkiza from whatever part of Athens you live. Still, you have also other oppurtunities, like taking KTEL from Pedion tou Areos, near the Archaelogical Museum in Center of Athens, with destination Sounion. These tourist buses lookalikes make stop at the centre of Varkiza. Other option is taking some of the buses from the End Stop of the tram in Voula, with destination Varkiza. With those buses you can also visit Limanakia, which are rocky beaches between Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, beloved mostly from young people. Visit Varkiza and experience the feeling of being in a greek island, without having to visit one! Surrounded by beautiful landscape of mountains, trees, rocks, sand, and shining happy people who just had a swim, Varkiza defenetely wins the first prize between the beaches south of Athens.
